Sil-Bind is known as Sodium Silicate and is a waterbased non-toxic binder. We currently (as of March 2023) have an inventory of Sil-Bind.
Binders are best measured by weight. The ratios are pretty simple for every 100 lbs of sand, we use 4% in binder (4 lbs). 10% of the binder is 0.4 lbs (6.4 oz) and that is the amount of catalyst
Often we mix up 50 lb increments of sand at a time because each bag is #50. Do not change this ratio 100:4:0.4
There are different speeds of Catlyst. We have cat70 meaning you have a 70 minute set time. Giving it 2 hours to flip is a safe amount to prevent any issues of it not setting up.
Here is a chart for Sil Bind Chemistry
Sand | Binder | Catalyst | Notes |
12.5 lbs | 8 oz. | 0.8 oz | 1/4 bag (smallest Batch) |
30 lbs | 19.2 oz (20 oz) | 1.92 oz (2 oz) | #30 Doodle Bowl Batch |
50 lbs | 4 lbs | 6.4 oz | one bag |
100 lbs | 8 lbs | 12.8 oz | two bags, max amount for small mixer |
150 lbs | 12 lbs | 1lb 3.2 oz | three bags, does not mix well in small mixer |
