Tie Pin (Learn to Solder Kit)

Project Members: Royce Pipkins, Brant Holeman, and many others!

The Tie Pin “Learn to Solder Kit” was created so that when the Makerspace takes part in events with the public, we can teach people how to solder.

Participants learn through-hole and surface mount soldering.

Pre-Event setup:

  1. Obtain materials at least 2 weeks in advance
  2. Clean off two tables in the electronics lab
  3. Setup 2-4 soldering stations with:
  4. Two chairs
  5. Soldering iron
  6. Iron tip cleaner
  7. PCB holder
  8. Helping Hands
  9. De-soldering braid
  10. About 1mm diameter rosin core solder
  11. Solder flux
  12. Flush cutter

Each pin consists of:

  1. 1x circuit board
  2. 2x 3mm LEDs
  3. 2x ~200 ohm 1/4 watt resistors
  4. 1x CR2032 battery
  5. 1x CR2032 battery holder
  6. 1x lapel pin
  7. 1x lapel pin back
  8. Small amount of solder
  9. Small amount of solder flux
