Helpful Hint

  • This week's helpful hint comes from Steve Hobley (stephenhobley.com) in MAKE magazine
    • Learn how to use a CAD program: I have solved so many problems within a CAD program that, when it comes time for the actual build, I can pretty much sail through it. If you draw everything to scale, you can estimate materials properly, move pieces around, link entities, and test the mechanics — all from the comfort of your armchair/bed/bath. Saves you so much time in the long run and “additional” trips to the hardware store.

Topics

    • Most regular events on pause due to COVID spike.
    • Fusion 360 classes continue virtually, Monday's at 7 PM.
    • Board of Director Meeting, Thursday, February 17th at 7 PM. (may be virtual)

Safety Note

  • This week's safety tip comes from member Jon D (the guy making the cool steam machine):
    • If you're drilling sheet metal, always clamp the work piece to the table of the drill press (or the surface, if you're using a hand drill.) Otherwise, at the moment the bit goes through it will grab the piece and spin it, and it will put a gash in your hand. Also, be neat like me and wipe up all the blood after you stanch the bleeding. (DOoh!)

Rule and Regulation of the Week

  • If it is a power tool or has a gas line, you need to be trained on it and be signed off before you can use it.
  • Please remember, most of the machines in our shops are owned by members and are on loan to the Space.
  • You may have used a table saw before, but there are differences. Please be trained before using someone else's tools.
