Helpful Hint

  • This week's helpful hint comes from member Anderson:
    • Here's a fun tip I just learned, although I'm sure some of the more experienced sewers already know it:

I'd been trying to sew a silk lining into a quilt coat I am making, but really struggling to evenly cut such a slippery fabric. I learned from a friend that you can use spray basting (common for quilting) to attach your fabric onto tissue paper, then cut and sew it that way. At the end, just rip off the tissue paper. You might want to replace your needle afterwards, because paper tends to dull them, but otherwise it's been working like a charm for me.

Topics

    • Most regular events on pause due to COVID spike.
    • Fusion 360 classes continue virtually, Monday's at 7 PM.

Safety Note

  • This week's safety tip comes from member David A:
    • Years ago a MATC welding instructor told us to make a 1” vertical relief cut in the tails of our shirts. Something I still continue to do. Once, while using a large handheld grinder, some part of my shirt got caught. In an instant, I was topless, very surprised, but otherwise fine. It took awhile to unravel the grinder. But, for the most part, the shirt was in two halves torn right up the middle of the back.

Rule and Regulation of the Week

  • This was submitted by a member in 2019 and is a good reminder:
  • Please do your part to keep the space neat. Before you leave the space clean up and put away whatever equipment and workspace you may have been using. Projects often involve working on five or more machines, and it is easy to accidentally only clean up 4 out of 5 work areas. To offset this, its best to leave the space just a little cleaner than you’ve found it. A mess, left behind, annoys the other members and damages the sense of community that is the true value of the space.

Member Topics and Announcements
