Agenda

  • Member Recognition for Awesomeness
  • Membership Sign-ups

    • Please hold your applause so we can keep this thing rolling
    • Meeting adjourns

Helpful Hint

  • The helpful hints and safety tips this week are by Bill Williams (Bill squared) the Metal Shop Champion.
  • Metal shop FILES:
    • Files cut in the FORWARD direction only. Don't use it like a lumber jack, sawing lumber up in the Upper Peninsula.
    • When cutting aluminum with a file, apply chalk on file so the aluminum does not stick to the file. Yes, that is why there is chalk in the file draw with the files. (I love that there is a file draw for the files).
    • If the file gets filled with aluminum, use a File Card (a specific wire brush for files) to remove the aluminum residue from the file.
    • If you don't know how to use a file card, ask Bill Williams. He is happy to teach you.
    • Thank you Bill Williams!

Topics

  • Next Space Improvement Day is scheduled for SATURDAY, JUNE 19th. Food is slated to be tacos from Hernandez.
  • Maker Fair scheduled for September 24-26. The MMS level of involvement is TBD. Fair being hosted by MSOE
  • MMS to participate in the Bay View Gallery night on Friday, June 25th. Need members to help with set up, tear down and to give tours to visitors. Also a great spot to sell your projects. There is a sign up sheet on the WIKI.

Safety Note

  • Do NOT grind aluminum on a grinding wheel in the metal finishing area.
  • Aluminum damages the grinding wheel.
  • To repair the wheel, it has to be ground down to remove all the aluminum residue, which makes for a small wheel
  • In addition, Aluminum heats up the wheel significantly more than steel does and the wheel can explode.
  • If Bill squared catches you grinding aluminum on a wheel…….it will be even worse!
  • A quick test for aluminum: if the metal is NOT magnetic, don't grind it on the wheel.
    • Unless you are 100% sure it is stainless steel.

Rule and Regulation of the Week

  • If a machine stops working or is not working as well as it should:
    • Tag out the machine by placing an “Broken/Out of Order” tag through one of the holes in the plug with a wire or zip tie. This will keep the next person from plugging a broken machine back into the outlet…..or at least slow them down.
    • Post a note to the members only board describing the issue and what you were doing when the machine stopped working.
    • An area champion or their designee will then take the appropriate action to get the machine back on line.

Member Topics and Announcements

  • Jeff Mann announced on Wednesdays, the Ceramics area will sponsor CERAMICS AND CERVEZAS.
    • The goal being to rebuild our ceramics community.
    • BYOB and enjoy.
  • No heavy equipment in the newly paved parking lot for the next few months as the asphalt hardens. Pls reach out to Tom G, Dan J, Jake B or Rudy if you need to use a fork lift outside the building to load/unload. Do NOT attempt to use the fork lift outside the Norwich building.
  • Carl S will be starting a new Fusion 360 class on Monday June 21st. The plan is for it to be a hybrid class (on-line and in person at Lenox). Stay tuned for more info.
