Introductory Lenox training: basic studio use

Note: Only point form is presented here - the full training is required to use the space.

Expectations

This will show the basic steps of how to make print using the screenprinting area. It isn't a full class on how to design, create, and print an edition. The intent is to learn safety and studio etiquette for the space There are a lot of technical terms. They aren't really important, but can help with communication about the process (especially if you're googling “how to's”. I'll use these so you've heard them, but it's okay to check what something means.

Areas around us

  • We're sandwiched between glass fusion on one side and private rental storage on the other
  • Most of the vaults on the opposing side are personal storage, but there is one belonging to our area
  • Please be mindful of the hallway and allow space for people to pass by (around 3 ft)
  • In case of emergencies the closest fire extinguisher and first aid kit is kept around the corner
  • Kilns are next to us - if there is a fire, unplug if it's safe to do so
  • Light switches are on either end of the hallway
  • Field-trip down the hall
    • Exit is in this direction (not the barricaded door)
    • Fire alarm pull
    • Grey breaker box (typically don't touch this)

Our own area

  • We have a storage vault for dust-sensitive materials (and eventually emulsions) - for now this is screen storage
  • 3 tables (please keep clear, except what's screwed down). These can all move
  • Cabinet - top is library, inks, and small tools. Bottom is Dylan's office
  • The 4-arm/4-colour printing press with attached heating
  • Clothes rack for hanging prints
  • Heat press (Needs its own circuit)
  • Washout sink and power washer (for cleaning screens)
  • Rest currently in development

Screenprinting vs. other traditional printmaking methods

  • Screenprinting has a mesh with a solid image printed over the top
    • Place over flat object (paper, fabric, etc)
    • push ink through holes - image masks off
    • Commonly used for quick DIY projects like t-shirts and gig posters
  • Other methods are covered in the other building
    • Usually create image on one surface and press against paper to transfer
    • May get a small press at Lenox too
  • Some additional techniques are planned at Lenox, but will need a “refresher” training once set-up

Basics of pulling a print

    • bucket with some water, spray bottle, sponges

    • Paper-towels in arms reach
